It's become a cliche to talk about how Donald Glover is talented at, well, everything, so I'll skip past that. Like a lot of people, I was blown away by the music video for "This Is America." After watching it many, many times, I realized that I haven't really followed his musical output lately, which compelled me to seek out his most recent album. As it turns out, it was Awaken, My Love!, a (Grammy-nominated) psychedelic funk album. Which... sure, why not?
Much like Kanye's unexpected pivot from rap into the world of Auto-Tune, Awaken, My Love! was initially a little jarring for me, but I warmed up to it upon repeat listens. "Me and Your Mama" completely took me by surprise when I first heard it, for example, with its intense screams and wailing guitars. Things started to really click once I got to "Zombies" and all of its crazy little touches, including what sounds like a monster opening its gaping maw about at about three and a half minutes in. "Terrified" and its immensely catchy chorus (oooOOooOooH) may even be my favorite song that he's put out thus far.
I will say, however, that "California" is incredibly unpleasant to listen to, parody or not. Yeesh.
